Speed U — Privacy Policy

Last revised: August 4, 2026

This Privacy Policy describes how Specific Physical Elements for Enhancing Development Inc. ("Speed U," "we," "us," or "our") collects, uses, and shares information through the Speed U website (speedu.ca), the Speed U app (app.speedu.ca and the mobile app), and related services (collectively, the "Service").

A Note on Who Uses Speed U

Speed U is used by players across a wide age range, including children under 13. We ask about this directly: when an account is created, signup asks which age group the account is for, and the process changes based on the answer (see "Children's Privacy" below). This policy is written with young users front and center, not as an afterthought.

(Speed U's skill difficulty tiers — Freshman, Sophomore, and so on — are purely difficulty labels for the skills themselves. They are not age groups and say nothing about how old any particular user is.)

Children's Privacy

If a player is under 13, a parent or legal guardian must consent before we collect any personal information from them, in line with children's privacy laws such as COPPA (US). In practice this means:

  • at signup, we ask which age group the account is for — we collect only that answer (18+, 13-17, or under 13), never a date of birth;
  • an account for a child under 13 must be created by a parent or guardian directly, who provides their own name and email (kept as our consent record, separate from the account's login email), reviews this Policy and the Terms & Conditions on the child's behalf, and checks an explicit consent box before the account is created;
  • we then confirm that email address is real and actually reachable by the parent or guardian by sending it a one-time confirmation code, which must be entered before the child's account can submit any video — the consent checkbox alone does not unlock this;
  • a parent or guardian can review what information we hold about their child, request it be corrected, or request it be deleted, by contacting us (see Contact Us below);
  • we do not knowingly collect more personal information from a child than is reasonably necessary for them to participate in the Service (submitting skill videos, tracking progress, and the related features described below);
  • we do not use a child's personal information for third-party targeted advertising, and we do not sell it.

If we learn that a child's personal information was collected without the required consent, we will take reasonable steps to delete it.

Information We Collect

Account information. When you sign up, we (and our membership system on speedu.ca) collect your name, email address, and a username, plus which age group the account is for (18+, 13-17, or under 13 — never a date of birth). For an under-13 player's account, we also collect the creating parent/guardian's own name and email address as our consent record, and the timestamp of their consent. We similarly keep a record of each account's answer to the video-marketing-use question (yes or no, and when it was answered) — see the Terms & Conditions' "Your Videos" section. Where relevant we also hold relationship information (e.g., an instructor-linked student, or a coach's team roster).

Skill videos and other content you submit. When you submit a video of yourself performing a hockey skill (or a challenge entry, or link an instructor/coach code), we collect that video, your progress on each skill, your XP and in-app currency ("Diamonds") totals, and any votes or judging decisions made on your submissions.

Profile information. An optional bio, and an optional profile photo (avatar).

Usage information. Basic technical information needed to run the app — your device/browser type, IP address, time zone, and log data generated by normal use (e.g., API request logs, referring/exit pages, date/time stamps), used for security and to keep the Service functioning correctly. On the speedu.ca website specifically, this kind of automatically-collected "device information" is gathered through cookies, log files, and similar web technologies — see "Cookies, Analytics, and Advertising" below.

Purchase information. When you make a purchase through speedu.ca (a membership, coach seats, or anything else sold there), speedu.ca collects the information needed to process the order — your name, billing address, payment information (handled by our payment processors — we don't store full card numbers ourselves), email address, and phone number where provided.

AI Shot Tracker footage (optional, Platinum feature). If you use the AI-powered shot-tracking feature, the video you upload for that specific purpose is sent to a third-party AI service for automated analysis (see Third-Party Services below) and then deleted from our storage once analysis completes — this footage is not kept long-term like skill-submission videos are.

How We Use Your Information

We use the information above to:

  • operate the Service — track your skill progress, run community judging, calculate XP/streaks/Diamonds, and show your progress to you, your linked coach or instructor, and (where applicable) other community members judging your submissions;
  • fulfill orders placed through speedu.ca — process payments, provide invoices and order confirmations, and screen orders for potential risk or fraud (in particular, using your IP address);
  • communicate with you about your account (e.g., in-app notifications when a submission is judged) and, in line with the preferences you've shared with us, send you information about our products or services;
  • improve and optimize the Service, including through analytics about how the speedu.ca website is used;
  • maintain the security of the Service and prevent abuse;
  • as described in the Terms & Conditions, and only with the separate, explicit consent described there, use submitted video content for marketing and promotional purposes (e.g., social media).

We do not use your (or your child's) app information for third-party targeted advertising, and we never use a child's information for targeted advertising of any kind. (The speedu.ca website's own analytics and advertising cookies are covered separately below.)

Video Visibility — Who Can Actually See a Submitted Video

This is worth stating plainly, not just implying: a skill or challenge video you submit for community judging is visible to other Speed U users — on the Judge page while it's pending, and on your own public profile page both while pending and after it's resolved — not only to Speed U staff. Video submitted specifically as practice/homework to a coach is judged only by that coach, not the wider community. An instructor you're linked to can also submit a video on your behalf, with the consent already required at signup or code-redemption.

Where Video Is Stored, and For How Long

Skill and challenge submission videos are stored on Cloudflare R2 (a third-party cloud storage provider) and kept until you delete your account or a moderator removes the specific video (e.g., for violating the Terms). We don't have a fixed auto-deletion timer for this content today — it's used for ongoing judging, replay, and coaching review, so it's kept indefinitely by default.

Instructional/reference videos (the "how to do this skill" videos shown on each skill) are stored in a public cloud storage bucket, meaning their direct link is technically accessible to anyone who has it, not access-controlled the way your own submission videos are.

Profile photos (avatars) are also stored in a public bucket for the same reason — they're low-sensitivity, publicly-visible-anyway content (a profile picture is already shown to other users), so there's no access control beyond the link itself.

Cookies, Analytics, and Advertising (speedu.ca website)

The speedu.ca website uses standard web technologies to collect the "device information" described above:

  • Cookies — data files placed on your device, often including an anonymous unique identifier. You can disable cookies in your web browser; for more about cookies and how to disable them, visit http://www.allaboutcookies.org. Be aware that we will still hold information you've directly provided (like your email address) even with cookies disabled.
  • Log files — track actions occurring on the site (IP address, browser type, internet service provider, referring/exit pages, date/time stamps).
  • Web beacons, tags, and pixels — electronic files used to record how you browse the site.

Analytics. We use Google Analytics to help us understand how visitors use the speedu.ca website. You can read about how Google uses your information at https://www.google.com/intl/en/policies/privacy/ and opt out of Google Analytics at https://tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout.

Advertising. The speedu.ca website may use the information collected above to show you targeted advertisements or marketing communications we believe may interest you. For more about how targeted advertising works, see the Network Advertising Initiative's educational page at http://www.networkadvertising.org/understanding-online-advertising/how-does-it-work. You can opt out of targeted advertising here:

  • Facebook — https://www.facebook.com/settings/?tab=ads
  • Google — https://www.google.com/settings/ads/anonymous
  • Bing — https://advertise.bingads.microsoft.com/en-us/resources/policies/personalized-ads
  • or via the Digital Advertising Alliance's opt-out portal at http://optout.aboutads.info/.

This does not apply to children's app data. The app itself does not run advertising cookies, and as stated under "Children's Privacy," we never use a child's personal information for targeted advertising.

Do Not Track. We do not alter the site's data collection and use practices when we see a Do Not Track signal from your browser.

Third-Party Services We Use

Speed U relies on a small number of third-party providers to operate:

  • Cloudflare R2 — stores submission and instructional videos.
  • Supabase — handles account authentication and stores avatar images and core app data.
  • speedu.ca / WordPress — the authoritative membership/account system; your Speed U app account is linked to (and shares credentials with) a speedu.ca membership account. See "Account Linking" below.
  • Google Gemini (AI) — if you use the AI Shot Tracker feature specifically, your uploaded footage for that feature is processed by Google's Gemini AI service to detect and count shots, then deleted from our own storage once processing completes. This is the one place third- party AI directly analyzes uploaded video content, and it's opt-in (you have to choose to use that specific feature).
  • Railway / Vercel — host our backend and website infrastructure.

We share the minimum information each of these providers needs to do their job, and we don't sell your personal information to anyone.

We may also disclose your personal information to comply with applicable laws and regulations, to respond to a subpoena, search warrant, or other lawful request for information we receive, or to otherwise protect our rights.

Account Linking with speedu.ca

Speed U app accounts are provisioned against a linked speedu.ca (WordPress) membership account — your email/password are verified against speedu.ca, and an app-side account is created or refreshed to mirror it. This means your account credentials and membership status are shared between speedu.ca and the app's own backend infrastructure. Deleting your app account does not delete or affect your underlying speedu.ca membership — if you sign back in later, a fresh, empty app profile is created against the same speedu.ca identity. See "What Account Deletion Does" below.

Data Shared with Coaches and Instructors

If you (or your parent/guardian) link your account to a coach or instructor using their code, that coach or instructor can see your skill progress, submissions, and streak. An instructor specifically can also submit video on your behalf and verify skills for you, as already disclosed and consented to during the linking process. This access ends if the link is removed.

The linking checkbox also grants that specific coach or instructor permission to use your videos, including on their own social media (for example, a team account) — see the Terms & Conditions' "Community Judging and Visibility" section. That permission is separate from Speed U's own marketing-use consent, and a coach's or instructor's social media account is theirs, not ours — links consented before this permission existed cover coaching use only.

Account Suspension and Banning

If Speed U suspends or permanently bans an account from the app (for violating the Terms & Conditions), that action affects app access only — it does not pause, cancel, or delete the underlying speedu.ca membership or billing, and does not itself delete any of the data described in this policy. See the Terms & Conditions for the full detail on what banning does and doesn't do.

What Account Deletion Does

Deleting your app account (available in Settings, for non-staff accounts) permanently removes your app profile — XP, streak, videos, and skill progress. It does not touch your underlying speedu.ca membership, which continues to exist and can be billed independently. If you sign back in later using the same speedu.ca credentials, a brand-new, empty app profile is created — none of your old progress comes back.

Instructor, coach, and other staff-flagged accounts currently can't be self-deleted through this flow, because doing so would also affect linked students' data, commission records, and team rosters; contact us directly (see below) if you need to close one of these accounts.

Data Retention

We generally keep your information for as long as your account exists and for as long as we need it to operate the Service, except as noted above for AI Shot Tracker footage (deleted after analysis). If you delete your account, the data described in "What Account Deletion Does" above is removed at that time.

When you place an order through speedu.ca, we keep that order's information for our records unless and until you ask us to delete it.

Your Rights (and Your Child's Rights)

You (or, for a child's account, their parent/guardian) can:

  • review the personal information we hold;
  • ask us to correct inaccurate information;
  • ask us to delete your account and associated data (see above for what that does and doesn't include);
  • withdraw consent for a child's account at any time, which will result in that account and its data being deleted.

To exercise any of these, contact us at the email below.

Canadian residents. We handle personal information in accordance with Canada's Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) and applicable provincial privacy laws. You may request access to or correction of your personal information, or make a complaint about our privacy practices, using the contact information below.

Where your information is processed. By using the Service, you authorize us to use your information in Canada and any other country where we operate. Our infrastructure providers (listed above) may process data in Canada and the United States, so your information may be transferred outside your own country — including, for European residents, outside Europe.

European residents. If you are a European resident, you have the right to access the personal information we hold about you and to ask that it be corrected, updated, or deleted — contact us at the email below. We process your information to fulfill contracts we may have with you (for example, a membership purchased through speedu.ca) or otherwise to pursue the legitimate business interests described above.

Data Security

We take reasonable steps to protect your information, but no online service can guarantee perfect security. If you believe your account has been compromised, contact us immediately.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in our practices or for legal/operational reasons. We'll update the "Last revised" date above when we do.
